How to Create a Windows 7 System Image (Intro)

This Guide is to show you how to make a System Image of your Windows 7 operating System, programs, files and preferences, this is highly beneficial especially if your system becomes corrupt or you have hard drive failure that causes a complete loss of data.

With a System image created you can restore your Windows install quickly and easily on the same or different hard drive, if you regularly update it then data loss will be minimal, if disaster strikes.

How to Create a Windows 7 System Image (Guide)

You will need an external, or extra internal hard drive, preferably equal to the size or larger the drives you use everyday. I (For example) needed a 124 GB of free space to backup. Using DVD's or CD's will take longer and use many disks. E-Sata external drives are preferable, USB external drives are OK also although security is not as tight as E-Sata, internal drives are good also but you detach them after backup (Removable drive bay is a good way of doing it), as if they are detached electrical surges and viruses could infect your backup.

Order of preference:

  1. External E-Sata drive (Requires an E-Sata connection)

  2. Internal Sata drive (In Removable Drive Bay)

  3. Internal IDE drive (In removable Drive Bay)

  4. Internal Sata drive

  5. Internal IDE drive

  6. External USB 2.0 drive

  7. External USB 1.1 drive

  8. DVD's

The first thing to do is attach your preferred backup device and allow it to install, setup the device, allow Windows to install drivers.

To begin the backup click "Start"

Next click on "Control Panel"

When Control Panel opens click on "Backup your Computer"....

or "Backup and Restore"

Next the following menu will appear, now click on "Create a System Image"

Your system will no search for Backup devices.....

Select your Backup device. You will not be able to choose your Main drive or any of its Partitions. Click the down arrow to select another drive. You may also select "On or more DVD's" (This may take a long time and allot of disks). Click on "Next" to continue.

You will Now be told the amount of Space that the backup will require (124 GB in our example), also where you are backing too will be listed and the drives that will be backed up (C & D in my example), click "Start Backup" to continue.

The Backup will begin, this will take sometime to complete.

Sometime later the following screen will appear, there will be no indication of time, so be patient.

When complete the "Create a System Repair Disk" option will appear, if you already have one, don't require one or don't have a DVD drive then click "No", then "Close" to exit...
